What is Political Science?

At its core, Political Science is the systematic study of governance, power, and political behavior. It explores how societies resolve conflicts, how laws are created, and how authority is distributed. It isn’t just about politicians and elections; it is about the fundamental structures that dictate our daily lives—from the local council to international organizations.

What This Quiz Covers:

To help you brush up before you start, keep these key pillars in mind:

  • The Four Elements of a State: You cannot have a state without a Population, a defined Territory, a functioning Government, and—most importantly—Sovereignty (the supreme power to govern itself).
  • Power vs. Authority: While power is the ability to influence others, authority is the recognized, legal right to do so.
  • Major Ideologies: Expect questions on Liberalism (individual liberty), Socialism (equality and collective ownership), and Marxism (class struggle).
  • Systems of Government: Do you know the difference between a Parliamentary system and a Presidential one? Or how the Separation of Powers keeps the Legislative, Executive, and Judicial branches in check?
  • The Great Thinkers: From Aristotle (the Father of Political Science) to Machiavelli and John Locke, these philosophers laid the groundwork for modern political thought.

Instructions: Read each question carefully. There is only one correct answer for each. Good luck, and let’s see if you have what it takes to be a political scientist!
