دین کے لغوی و اصطلاحی معنی
عربی زبان ایک وسیع اور فصیح زبان ہے جہاں ایک لفظ کے کئی پہلو ہوتے ہیں۔ لفظ “دین” عربی لغت میں غلبہ، اقتدار، السلاء، جزا، بدلہ اور مکافاتِ عمل کے معنی میں استعمال ہوتا ہے ۔ اس کے ساتھ ساتھ یہ اطاعت، غلامی، طریقہ اور مسلک کی بھی نمائندگی کرتا ہے ۔ علمی اصطلاح میں دین سے مراد وہ طرزِ زندگی، فکر اور ہمہ گیر نظامِ عمل ہے جس کی پیروی انسان اپنی زندگی کے تمام شعبوں میں کرتا ہے ۔ دین محض چند رسومات کا مجموعہ نہیں بلکہ وحی الٰہی کے ذریعے نازل کردہ ایک مکمل ضابطہ حیات اور قانون ہے، جس کا نام اللہ تعالیٰ نے “اسلام” رکھا ہے ۔ صحیح بخاری کی روایت کے مطابق، دین خیر اور شر کی جزا کا دوسرا نام ہے ۔ یہ ایک ایسا نظام ہے جو انسان کی انفرادی اور اجتماعی زندگی کے ہر پہلو کو محیط کیے ہوئے ہے۔
قرآن و حدیث کی روشنی میں دین کی اہمیت
قرآن مجید کی متعدد آیات دین کی عالمگیریت اور اہمیت پر دلالت کرتی ہیں۔ اللہ تعالیٰ کا ارشاد ہے:
اَفَغَیرَ دِینِ اللّٰہ یَبغُونَ وَ لہۤ اَسلَمَ مَنۡفِی السَّمٰوٰتِ وَ الاَرضِ طَوعًا وَّ کَرہًا وَّ اِلَیہِ یُرجَعُونَ
ترجمہ: “کیا یہ لوگ اللہ کے دین کے سوا کوئی اور دین چاہتے ہیں؟ حالانکہ وہ سب چیزیں جو آسمانوں میں ہیں اور زمین میں ہیں، چار و ناچار سب اسی کے آگے سر تسلیم خم ہیں اور اسی کی طرف پلٹ کر انہیں جانا ہے ۔”
یہ آیت واضح کرتی ہے کہ کائنات کا ذرہ ذرہ فطری طور پر اللہ کے قانون کا پابند ہے۔ اسی طرح سورہ آل عمران میں فرمایا گیا کہ اللہ کے نزدیک معتبر دین صرف اسلام ہے ۔ اسلام ہی وہ اصل دین ہے کیونکہ اس کا منبع اللہ کی ذات ہے جو ہر خطا سے پاک ہے ۔ اللہ کی بصیرت کامل ہے، اس سے زمین و آسمان کی کوئی چیز پوشیدہ نہیں، لہٰذا اس کا دیا ہوا نظام ہی انسانی عقل کے لیے بہترین راہنما ہے ۔ قرآن کریم تدبر کی دعوت دیتا ہے تاکہ انسانی عقل کے تالے کھل سکیں اور وہ حقیقت تک پہنچ سکے ۔
دین ایک فطری ضرورت اور سکونِ قلب کا ذریعہ
دین انسان کی جبلت اور فطرت کا تقاضا ہے۔ سورہ الروم میں ارشاد ہے کہ اپنا رخ دینِ حنیف کی طرف کر لو، کیونکہ یہی وہ فطرت ہے جس پر اللہ نے انسانوں کو پیدا فرمایا ۔ یہاں تک کہ وہ لوگ جو بظاہر خدا کے منکر رہے، جیسے جواہر لال نہرو، انہوں نے بھی اعتراف کیا کہ انتہائی مشکل مسائل میں جب عقل جواب دے جاتی ہے تو وہ کسی اعلیٰ ہستی کے سامنے جھکنے اور آنسو بہانے سے دلی اطمینان محسوس کرتے تھے ۔ دین سے دوری ذہنی پریشانی اور اضطراب کا باعث بنتی ہے، جبکہ اللہ کی یاد دلوں کو وہ سکون فراہم کرتی ہے جو دنیا کی کسی اور شے میں ممکن نہیں ۔
اَلَا بِذِكْرِ اللّٰهِ تَطْمَىِٕنُّ الْقُلُوْبُ
ترجمہ: “بے شک دلوں کا اطمینان اللہ کی یاد سے ہوتا ہے ۔”
رواداری، امن اور وحدتِ انسانیت
اسلامی نظامِ دین رواداری اور امن و آشتی کا علمبردار ہے۔ دین میں جبر کی کوئی گنجائش نہیں رکھی گئی ۔ اللہ تعالیٰ فساد کو پسند نہیں فرماتا ۔ دین تفرقہ بازی کی ممانعت کرتا ہے اور پوری انسانیت کو ایک خاندان قرار دیتا ہے ۔
اَلْخَلْقُ عِيَالُ اللّٰهِ
ترجمہ: “ساری مخلوق اللہ کا کنبہ ہے ۔”
اسلام میں رہبانیت کا کوئی تصور نہیں، یعنی دنیا سے کٹ کر زندگی گزارنا دین کا مقصد نہیں بلکہ دین و دنیا کی وحدت اصل مقصود ہے ۔
دین: ایک جامع نظامِ زندگی
انسان کی زندگی ایک کل (Whole) ہے جس کا ہر حصہ دوسرے سے جڑا ہوا ہے ۔ ہمیں گھریلو معاملات سے لے کر بین الاقوامی تعلقات تک راہنمائی کی ضرورت ہوتی ہے ۔ فکر، علم، معاشرت، تعلیم، مذہب، اخلاق، معیشت اور سیاست کے لیے الگ الگ متصادم نظاموں کی ضرورت نہیں، بلکہ ایک ایسا جامع نظام درکار ہے جو انسان کو اس کے بلند ترین مقصد تک پہنچا سکے ۔ اسلام وہی جامع نظام ہے جس کی تکمیل کا اعلان اللہ تعالیٰ نے کر دیا ہے:
اَلْیَوْمَ اَکْمَلْتُ لَکُمْ دِیْنَکُمْ وَ اَتْمَمْتُ عَلَیْکُمْ نِعْمَتِیْ وَ رَضِیْتُ لَکُمُ الْاِسْلَامَ دِیْنًا
ترجمہ: “آج میں نے تم پر اپنا دین مکمل کر دیا اور تم پر اپنی نعمت تمام کر دی اور تمہارے لیے اسلام کو بطور دین پسند کر لیا ۔”
مذہب کا تصور اور آغاز
مذہب عربی لفظ ہے جس کے معنی “راستے پر چلنا یا گزرنا” کے ہیں ۔ اصطلاحی طور پر یہ کسی ایسی مقدس اور بالاتر ان دیکھی ذات پر اعتقاد کا نام ہے جو انسان کو محبت، رغبت، ڈر اور عاجزی کے ساتھ اس کی اطاعت پر ابھارے ۔ ای بی ٹیلر کے مطابق مذہب روحانی موجودات پر یقین کا نام ہے ۔ ارتقائی تصورِ مذہب یہ کہتا ہے کہ انسان نے خوف کی وجہ سے بت پرستی شروع کی اور آہستہ آہستہ وحدانیت تک پہنچا ۔ لیکن دینی نقطہ نظر اس کے برعکس ہے؛ انسان کو زمین پر بھیجنے کے ساتھ ہی روحانی ہدایت بھی دی گئی، لہٰذا توحید قدیم ہے اور شرک بعد کی ایجاد ہے ۔ ابتدائی انسان کا عقیدہ خالص توحیدی تھا اور اللہ کی ذات ہی اعلیٰ ترین ہستی تھی ۔
دین اور مذہب میں بنیادی فرق
دین اور مذہب میں فرق کو سمجھنا علمی لحاظ سے ضروری ہے۔ پروفیسر شمٹ اور دیگر محققین کے مطابق دین خالص توحید پر مبنی ہوتا ہے، جبکہ مذہب میں اکثر انسانی آمیزش ہو جاتی ہے (جیسے بعض مذاہب میں کسی کو اللہ کا بیٹا قرار دینا) ۔ دین ہر دور کے نبی پر ایمان لانے کا تقاضا کرتا ہے کیونکہ اللہ نے ہر امت میں رسول مبعوث فرمایا ۔ دین میں عقیدہ آخرت اور جوابدہی کا ایک مکمل نظام موجود ہے کہ انسان کی تخلیق بے مقصد نہیں اور اسے اپنے رب کی طرف پلٹنا ہے ۔ میتھو آرنلڈ کے نزدیک مذاہب محض جذبات سے مزین اخلاقیات ہیں ، جبکہ دین انسانی زندگی کے ہر پہلو، خواہ وہ معاشی ہوں یا معاشرتی، ان کا حل پیش کرتا ہے۔ مثال کے طور پر معیشت اور صحت کے حوالے سے حکم ہے:
وَ كُلُوْا وَ اشْرَبُوْا وَ لَا تُسْرِفُوْا
ترجمہ: “خوب کھاؤ پیو اور فضول خرچی (اسراف) مت کرو ۔”

Linguistic and Terminological Meaning of Deen
The Arabic language is vast and eloquent, where a single word has multiple aspects. The word “Deen” in Arabic lexicons is used in the meanings of dominance, authority, recompense, reward, and requital of actions. Alongside, it also represents obedience, servitude, way, and creed. In academic terminology, Deen refers to that way of life, thought, and comprehensive system of action that man follows in all spheres of his life. Deen is not merely a collection of a few rituals but a complete code of life and law revealed through divine revelation, which Allah Almighty has named “Islam.” According to a narration in Sahih Bukhari, Deen is another name for the reward of good and evil. It is a system that encompasses every aspect of human individual and collective life.
Importance of Deen in the Light of Quran and Hadith
Numerous verses of the Holy Quran indicate the universality and importance of Deen. Allah Almighty states:
Afaghayra dīnillāhi yabghūna wa lahu aslama man fis-samāwāti wal-arḍi ṭaw’an wa karhan wa ilayhi yurja’ūn
Translation: “So is it other than the religion of Allah they desire? While to Him have submitted [all] those within the heavens and the earth, willingly or by compulsion, and to Him they will be returned.”
This verse makes it clear that every particle of the universe is naturally bound by Allah’s law. Similarly, in Surah Al-Imran, it is stated that the only acceptable religion in the sight of Allah is Islam. Islam is the original Deen because its source is Allah’s essence, which is free from all error. Allah’s insight is perfect; nothing in the heavens and earth is hidden from Him, so His system is the best guide for human intellect. The Holy Quran invites deep thought so that the locks of human intellect may open and it may reach the truth.
Deen: A Natural Necessity and a Source of Peace of Heart
Deen is a requirement of human instinct and nature. In Surah Ar-Rum, it is commanded to turn your face towards the true Deen, for this is the nature upon which Allah created mankind. Even those who apparently denied God, like Jawaharlal Nehru, admitted that in extremely difficult problems when reason fails, they find inner satisfaction in bowing before a Supreme Being and shedding tears. Distance from Deen causes mental distress and anxiety, while the remembrance of Allah provides that peace to hearts which is not possible in any other thing in the world.
Alā bi dhikrillāhi taṭma’innul-qulūb
Translation: “Unquestionably, by the remembrance of Allah hearts are assured.”
Tolerance, Peace and the Unity of Humanity
The Islamic system of Deen is a champion of tolerance and peace. There is no room for compulsion in Deen. Allah Almighty does not like corruption. Deen prohibits discord and declares all of humanity as one family.
Al-khalqu ‘iyālullāh
Translation: “All creation is the family of Allah.”
There is no concept of monasticism (Rahbaniyyah) in Islam, meaning that living cut off from the world is not the purpose of Deen; rather, the unity of Deen and the world is the ultimate goal.
Deen: A Comprehensive System of Life
Human life is a whole, each part of which is connected to another. We need guidance from domestic affairs to international relations. We do not need separate conflicting systems for thought, knowledge, society, education, religion, ethics, economy, and politics; rather, we need a comprehensive system that can take man to his highest goal. Islam is that comprehensive system, the completion of which Allah Almighty has declared:
Al-yawma akmaltu lakum dīnakum wa atmamtu ‘alaykum ni’matī wa raḍītu lakumul-islāma dīnā
Translation: “This day I have perfected for you your religion and completed My favor upon you and have approved for you Islam as religion.”
The Concept and Origin of Religion (Mazhab)
“Mazhab” is an Arabic word meaning “to walk on a path or to pass.” Terminologically, it is the name of belief in a sacred and supreme unseen being that inspires man to obey it with love, desire, fear, and humility. According to E.B. Tylor, religion is the belief in spiritual beings. The evolutionary concept of religion states that man started idol worship due to fear and gradually reached monotheism. But the religious perspective is the opposite; along with sending man to earth, spiritual guidance was also given, so monotheism (Tawheed) is ancient and polytheism (Shirk) is a later invention. The belief of early man was pure monotheism, and Allah’s essence was the supreme being.
Fundamental Difference Between Deen and Religion
Understanding the difference between Deen and religion (Mazhab) is academically necessary. According to Professor Schmidt and other researchers, Deen is based on pure monotheism (Tawheed), while religion often has human interference (e.g., in some religions, someone is declared the son of God). Deen requires belief in the prophets of every era because Allah raised messengers for every nation. Deen has a complete system of belief in the Hereafter and accountability that man’s creation is not purposeless and he has to return to his Lord. According to Matthew Arnold, religions are merely morals adorned with emotions, while Deen provides solutions to every aspect of human life, whether economic or social. For example, regarding economy and health, He commands:
Wa kulū washrabū wa lā tusrifū
Translation: “Eat and drink, but be not excessive.”

Deen is the complete code of life based on divine revelation, while religion (Mazhab) often contains human interference. Deen champions Tawheed (monotheism), justice, tolerance, and comprehensiveness, providing natural peace and guiding humanity to the straight path.
