Meaning and Definition of Islamic Civilization and Culture
The word "Tahzeeb" is derived from Arabic, literally meaning to cut, prune, purify, and refine something. In academic terminology, it refers to the established habits, traditions, social customs, and spiritual and practical tendencies that are transmitted from one generation to another. According to the World Encyclopedia, it is the name of the collective lifestyle of any group. Sayyid Abul A'la Maududi defines civilization as a complete system encompassing thought and action, morals and manners, and all those aspects that humans adopt in their individual, economic, social, and political lives. In English, it is called "Culture," which means to cultivate land, educate, train, and polish something. The foundation of Islamic civilization is divine revelation (Wahy) and prophetic tradition (Sunnah), which distinguishes it from other human civilizations. It is not merely material progress but a comprehensive program for human spiritual and moral development that introduces humanity to true freedom through the servitude of the Lord.
Distinguished Characteristics of Islamic Civilization
The characteristics of Islamic civilization give it a universal and eternal status, the most important of which are as follows:
Monotheism (Tawheed): The Central Pillar of the Universe
Monotheism is the soul and foundation of Islamic civilization. This belief liberates man from the slavery of anyone other than Allah and submits him only to the One Creator. Allah Almighty says in the Holy Quran:
Iyyaka na'budu wa iyyaka nasta'een
Translation: "You alone we worship, and You alone we ask for help."
This concept deeply impacts human psychology, as the entire universe operates under one law, creating discipline and unity of thought in human society.
Purification of the Self (Tazkiyah) and Moral Training
Tazkiyah means purifying the soul from the pollution of sins and nurturing it. In Islamic civilization, inner purity is given precedence over external cleanliness. Once, upon returning from a battle, the Holy Prophet (PBUH) said: "You have returned from the lesser jihad to the greater jihad." When the Companions asked what the greater jihad was, he replied that it is a person's struggle against his own carnal desires. This concept makes a person a responsible and virtuous citizen who brings goodness to society.
Human Dignity and Equality
Islamic civilization shattered the idols of color, race, and class distinctions and restored human dignity. Allah Almighty commands:
Wa laqad karramna bani adama wa hamalnahum fi al-barri wa al-bahri wa razaqnahum min al-tayyibati wa faddalnahum ala kathirin mimman khalaqna tafdeela
Translation: "And indeed We have honored the children of Adam, and carried them on land and sea, and provided them with good things, and preferred them greatly over many of those We have created."
A practical example of justice and equality is the letter of Umar (RA) to Abu Musa al-Ash'ari (RA) when appointing him as a judge, instructing him to treat people equally in his court and justice, so that no noble person hopes for oppression and no weak person despairs of justice.
Righteousness (Taqwa) and Social Justice
The only criterion for excellence in Islamic society is "Taqwa" (righteousness). During the Farewell Sermon, the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) clearly stated that no Arab has superiority over a non-Arab, nor does a white person have superiority over a black person. Regarding social justice, the divine command is:
I'dilu huwa aqrabu lil-taqwa
Translation: "Be just, that is nearer to righteousness."
Clarifying the principle of cooperation, the Quran states that you should help one another in righteousness and piety, and do not cooperate in sin and transgression.
Civilization and Principles of Urban Life
In Arabic, the root of "Tamaddun" is "Madinah," meaning city. Civilization means building cities and adopting the manners of urban life. In modern terminology, it is called "Civilization," which includes everything from a nation's lifestyle to modern technology. Islamic civilization has emphasized the rule of law and global peace. Peace can only be established in a society where the rule of law prevails. This includes the complete protection of non-Muslims' rights, including the safety of their places of worship and civil liberties.
Global Influences of Islamic Civilization
Islamic civilization has profoundly influenced the world educationally, religiously, and socially:
Educational Influences: Islam ended the monopoly on education by making the acquisition of knowledge obligatory for every Muslim man and woman. The establishment of "Suffah" in Madinah laid the foundation for formal educational institutions. Muslims established knowledge on empirical foundations and discouraged unbeneficial sciences like magic and astrology.
Religious and Intellectual Influences: The concept of monotheism connected man directly to the true Creator, freeing him from the worship of natural phenomena (fire, sun, moon). Freedom of thought and opinion was granted, which was absent before Islam. As a result, reform movements emerged in other religions (such as the Protestant movement in Christianity) that adopted the concept of direct accountability before God.
Social and Societal Influences: Islam showed the path to liberation from slavery and highlighted the feeling that Allah has created everyone free. Revolutionizing the status of women, it granted them the right to inheritance and khula, and gave the glad tidings that "Paradise lies under the feet of mothers." The concept of purity and cleanliness was made a part of faith through bathing (ghusl), ablution (wudu), and purification with sand (tayammum).
Example of Justice: Islamic history is filled with examples of justice. When a woman from an influential tribe committed theft and intercession was sought, the Prophet (PBUH) declared: "By God, if Fatimah, daughter of Muhammad, were to steal, I would cut off her hand."
Islamic civilization formed a welfare society where equality, tolerance, and human dignity are prioritized, and by inviting contemplation of the universe, it paved the way for modern scientific and social sciences.
Influences of Islamic Civilization on Religion and Thought
Islamic civilization not only revolutionized the lives of Muslims but also gave a new dimension to religious concepts and intellectual trends globally. Its intellectual influences were so universal that they broke the stagnation of the Middle Ages and formed a new global narrative through the beautiful synthesis of reason and revelation.
The Concept of Monotheism and the End of Nature Worship
Before Islam, major religions and civilizations were involved in the worship of natural phenomena—fire, sun, moon, and stars. The human mind was trapped in fear and superstition. Islamic civilization presented the universal concept of "Tawheed" that demoted the material existence of the universe from the status of deity and declared it a sign of Allah and subservient to man. This intellectual change freed man from the chains of superstition and connected him directly to the Creator of the universe, an influence that is notably visible in many subsequent religious and welfare philosophies.
Freedom of Thought and Opinion
Instead of suspending reason, Islamic civilization encouraged its use in the light of revelation. Islam presented the concept that religion is not based on blind imitation but on understanding and insight. This intellectual freedom opened new doors for academic discourse, philosophy, and logic. Muslims studied Greek, Indian, and Persian philosophies and, by molding them into an Islamic framework, created a new scholarly treasury that later laid the foundation for the Renaissance in Europe.
Reform Movements in Christianity (Protestantism)
The religious influences of Islamic civilization were not limited to the Muslim world but also became the precursor to major changes in the Christian world. Historians acknowledge that behind the "Protestant Reformation" in Christianity were the Islamic influences that reached Europe through Spanish and Crusader wars. Voices were raised against the monopoly of priests, and it was recognized that repentance and supplication should be only before God, not before priests. This was the direct concept of the relationship between Allah and His servant that Islam had introduced centuries earlier.
Discouragement of Unbeneficial Sciences like Magic and Astrology
Islamic civilization weighed knowledge on the scale of benefit and harm. Sciences that were merely a cause of illusion and misguidance for humanity, such as magic, soothsaying, and fortune-telling through the movement of stars, were strictly forbidden. Conversely, empirical sciences were encouraged, which gave birth to a scientific way of thinking.
Invitation to Contemplate the Universe
The Holy Quran repeatedly invites man to contemplate the mysteries and secrets of the universe. This intellectual movement inspired Muslims to new innovations in astronomy, mathematics, and physics. This was not merely scientific progress but was considered a religious duty to discover the universe created by Allah. On this intellectual foundation, the scientific and social sciences achieved an unprecedented peak in human history.
Islamic civilization gave humanity the awareness that man is not subservient to the universe
Rather, he was created to observe and conquer the universe
And this is the point from which the intellectual foundations of the modern world are established
Social and Societal Influences
Islamic civilization restructured human society on the basis of justice, respect for humanity, and moral values. This civilization uprooted ancient ignorant customs and laid the foundation of a society where a person's worth and value are tied to their righteousness (Taqwa) and character.
The Concept of Human Greatness and the Best of Creation
Islamic civilization granted man his lost lofty status. Other religions and civilizations held various negative concepts about man; for example, in Christianity, man was considered a born sinner, while in some sects of Hinduism, man was considered inherently filthy and purified with cow urine and dung. Islam rejected all these concepts and declared that man is not a despicable creature but the "best of creation" (Ashraf al-Makhlooqat). According to the Holy Quran, all children of Adam are honored and respected. This concept instilled self-respect and dignity in man and freed him from all forms of mental and physical slavery except to Allah.
Wa laqad karramna bani adama
Translation: "And indeed We have honored the children of Adam."
Liberation from Slavery and Human Freedom
Islamic civilization struck a decisive blow to the ancient and established institution of slavery. It awakened the realization that if Allah has created all humans free, how can one human being have the right to enslave another? Islam not only emphasized good treatment of slaves but also, by making the freeing of slaves obligatory for various expiations and acts of virtue, gradually ended this curse. It is a great favor of Islamic civilization that it granted equal citizenship rights to the downtrodden classes of society.
Revolutionary Improvement in the Status of Women
Before Islam, women had no social or legal status; rather, they were considered a burden or commodity of trade. Islamic civilization granted women rights that the modern world has only recently conceptualized. She was given a regular share in inheritance, her consent was made necessary for marriage, and she was given the legal right to free herself from an undesirable marriage through "Khula." Socially, her status as a mother was elevated to such an extent that the Prophet (PBUH) said:
Paradise lies under the feet of mothers
This statement is not merely a sentence but reflects the civilizational transformation that made women the most respected members of society.
Purity and Cleanliness (Taharah) and Lifestyle
Islamic civilization established high standards of cleanliness in human life by declaring purity as "half of faith." The commandments of bathing (ghusl), ablution (wudu), and cleanliness of clothing not only had positive effects on public health but also brought radiance and dignity to human personality. This civilization is not merely about external adornment and display but teaches keeping the outer self clean along with inner purification, which gave Islamic civilization a distinct and refined character.
Universality of Justice
An important aspect of Islamic society is the provision of justice without discrimination. Islamic civilization cultivated the concept that in the eyes of law, the king and the beggar are equal. The greatest example of this is the decision of the Prophet (PBUH) when a woman from an influential tribe was caught for theft and people came to intercede. The Prophet (PBUH) expressed anger and made it clear that previous nations were destroyed because they would spare the powerful and punish the weak. He swore that if Fatimah, daughter of Muhammad (PBUH), had committed this act, her hand would also be cut off. This expansion of justice gave birth to a peaceful society where every person's life, property, and honor were protected.
