Meaning and Legal Status of Hajj

Linguistically, the word “Hajj” means to intend to visit a sacred place. In Islamic terminology, it is a comprehensive and all-encompassing act of worship in which Muslims, during specific days (Dhul-Hijjah), travel to Makkah to visit the House of Allah (Baitullah) and perform specific rituals and acts of worship there. It is not merely a journey but the highest form of servitude to the Lord, where a servant presents himself at the threshold of his Creator’s House to prove his loyalty. Hajj is one of the five fundamental pillars of Islam and is obligatory once in a lifetime upon every capable Muslim who possesses the financial and physical ability to reach there. Its obligation was announced when the verses of Surah Al-Imran were revealed, and according to the narration of Ali (RA), the Holy Prophet ﷺ formally declared this duty at that very time.

Hajj in the Quran

The Holy Quran has declared Hajj as the right of Allah Almighty upon His servants, provided they have the ability to reach there. Allah Almighty says:

📖 Quran (Al-Imran: 97):
Wa lillahi ‘alan-nasi hijju ‘l-bayti mani-stata’a ilayhi sabila, wa man kafara fa inna Allaha ghaniyyun ‘ani ‘l-‘alamin
Translation: “And pilgrimage to the House is a duty owed to God by all people who are able to undertake it. And those who reject the truth [should know that] God is indeed self-sufficient, beyond need of all creation.”

This verse makes it clear that denying Hajj or abandoning it despite having the ability is akin to disbelief, because Allah Almighty is not in need of anyone’s worship; rather, it is a means of salvation for humanity itself. While mentioning the greatness of the Sacred House, Allah Almighty says:

📖 Quran (Al-Imran: 96):
Inna awwala baytin wudi’a lin-nasi lalladhi bi Bakkata mubarakan wa hudal lil-‘alamin
Translation: “The first House [of worship] appointed for mankind was that at Bakkah (Makkah), full of blessing and guidance for all worlds.”

This house is not only the center of Tawheed but also a source of spiritual guidance and blessings for all humanity, whose foundations include the sacrifices of Prophet Ibrahim (AS) and Prophet Ismail (AS).

Virtues of Hajj in Hadith

The Prophetic Hadith describe the extraordinary virtues of Hajj to inspire the love for this great journey in the hearts of believers. The Holy Prophet ﷺ said: “O people! Hajj has been made obligatory upon you, so perform Hajj.” On another occasion, regarding the acceptance of Hajj and its reward, extremely glad tidings are narrated:

⭐ Hadith of Prophet ﷺ:
“Whoever comes to this House (Kaaba) and does not commit any obscene or sinful act, will return (free from sins) as on the day his mother gave birth to him.”

This Hadith shows that an accepted Hajj (Hajj Mabrur) becomes an expiation for all past sins and grants a new pure life. Similarly, the reward for a virtuous Hajj (Hajj Mabrur) is nothing but Paradise. Since life is uncertain, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ instructed: “Whoever intends to perform Hajj should hasten to do so,” so that this obligation does not remain pending due to delay.

Spiritual and Moral Effects of Hajj

Hajj is not merely a collection of outward actions but a means to bring about a revolution in the inner universe of a person. Some of its important effects are as follows:

1

Strengthening of Tawheed

The proclamation of Talbiyah (Labbayk Allahumma Labbayk), kissing the Black Stone, circumambulating the Kaaba, and all rituals of Sa’ee and sacrifice fill a person with the spirit of Tawheed. These actions connect the servant’s relationship with only One Allah.

2

Strengthening of Faith

Hajj is an important pillar of Islam. If a person, despite having the means, does not show interest in it, his faith remains incomplete and the edifice of his Islam appears without pillars.

3

Source of Worship

This duty awakens the true feeling of servitude in a person and plays a key role in guiding him towards complete obedience.

4

Training in Endurance

Hajj is an act of worship that requires effort, where the pilgrim performs rituals while staying away from his comfortable home and family. This develops the habit of bearing hardship and difficulty, which is essential for success.

5

Control over Desires and Purification of Self

During Hajj, one receives strict training in controlling carnal desires and worldly passions. The pilgrim performs sincere repentance before departure, which helps keep him pure from sins.

6

Responsibility and Simplicity

Before embarking on the journey of Hajj, a person arranges for the needs of his family, which develops in him a sense of social responsibility. The two unstitched sheets of Ihram create simplicity in a person and protect him from extravagance, pride, and arrogance.

Economic Effects of Hajj

Hajj serves as a great economic center for the Islamic world, with effects at the global level:

🌍
International Trade
Millions of Muslims from around the world make purchases worth billions of rupees during Hajj, which greatly boosts not only Saudi Arabia’s local trade but also international commercial activities.
Economic Center
By the blessing of Prophet Ibrahim’s (AS) prayer, this valley is rich in material resources, especially oil reserves. Hajj provides a platform for traders from around the world to access and exchange these resources.
📝
Trade Agreements
Representatives of major companies and traders gather at this global assembly, resulting in international trade agreements and expansion of trade on a large scale.
💰
Rotation of Capital
Hajj accelerates the circulation of capital. The principle of economics is that the more wealth circulates, the more blessing and increase it brings.

Social Effects of Hajj

The greatest social fruit of Hajj is the “Unity of the Muslim Ummah.” When Muslims from different colors, races, languages, and geographical regions, dressed in the same clothing (Ihram), prostrate before the same God, an ideal unity and harmony develops among them.

1

Propagation of Islam

The great assembly of Hajj is also an effective means of Dawah and Tabligh, where people learn from each other’s experiences and the passion to spread Islam increases.

2

Harmony and Equality

During Hajj, distinctions between rich and poor, ruler and ruled, disappear. Everyone performs similar rituals, faces the same Qibla, and proclaims the same call — a practical picture of equality.

3

Elimination of Social Evils

When the pilgrim returns after repenting from sins and pledges to lead a pure life going forward, this brings about moral reform in society and eliminates social evils.

✦ Hajj: Worship, Training and Global Gathering ✦
