اسلامی فکر اور شریعت میں “عبادت” محض چند ظاہری رسومات کا نام نہیں ہے بلکہ یہ انسان کے پورے وجود کو اللہ رب العزت کی مرضی کے تابع کر دینے کا عمل ہے۔ لغوی اعتبار سے عبادت کے معنی “بندگی اور پرستش” کے ہیں ۔ اس اصطلاح کی گہرائی کو واضح کرتے ہوئے مشہور ماہر لغت امام راغب اصفہانی لکھتے ہیں کہ: “عبودیت اظہار فروتنی (عاجزی) کا نام ہے اور عبادت اس سے بھی بلیغ ہے، جس کے معنی انتہائی فروتنی اور کمال درجے کی عاجزی کے ہیں” ۔ یہ تعریف اس بات کی غمازی کرتی ہے کہ عبادت میں صرف جسمانی جھکاؤ کافی نہیں بلکہ دل کا اخلاص اور روح کی پکار شامل ہونی چاہیے۔ جب ایک بندہ اپنے خالق کے سامنے سر بسجود ہوتا ہے تو وہ اپنی انا، تکبر اور مادی وابستگیوں کو ترک کر کے خود کو مکمل طور پر اللہ کی حاکمیت کے حوالے کر دیتا ہے۔ یہی وہ “انتہائی فروتنی” ہے جو عبادت کو دیگر عام افعال سے ممتاز کرتی ہے۔

In Islamic thought and Shariah, “worship” is not merely the name of a few external rituals; rather, it is the act of subordinating one’s entire existence to the will of Allah Almighty. Lexically, worship means “servitude and devotion.” Explaining the depth of this term, the renowned lexicographer Imam Raghib al-Isfahani writes: “Servitude (Ubudiyyah) is the expression of humility, and worship (Ibadah) is even more eloquent, meaning extreme humility and the highest degree of submissiveness.” This definition indicates that worship requires not just physical bowing but sincerity of heart and the call of the soul. When a servant prostrates before his Creator, he abandons his ego, arrogance, and material attachments, completely surrendering himself to Allah’s sovereignty. This is the “extreme humility” that distinguishes worship from other ordinary actions.
